One of the most frustrating things about being an athlete or hobbyist is an injury that puts you out of commission. Particularly in the Midwest where the peak cycling season can be compromised by inclement weather, making the most of the season injury-free is critical. Village Cycle Center wants to make sure that you’re staying healthy, fit, and on the roads or trails as much as possible! Achilles Tendonitis is an overuse injury caused by minor tearing or inflammation of the Achilles tendon on the rear of your ankle.
Tip: If you’re experiencing the beginning symptoms of Achilles tendonitis, back off on your training immediately! Ice and take ibuprofen for a couple days before trying to reintroduce training. If you try to “train through the pain” you can do significantly more damage.
Patellar Tendonitis, like Achilles tendonitis, is inflammation of the tendons right below your kneecap.
Tip: This type of tendonitis can be a result of riding with your seat too low or riding too frequently in low gears. Make the appropriate adjustments, take a day or two off, and give it another try!
Broken Clavicle or Scapula is a very painful break of your collarbone or shoulder blade. These two are very common breaks from accidents.
Tip: If you start to fall, keep your hands on the handlebars. This is not going to feel natural to you, but it will protect you from catching yourself with an arm, putting serious stress on these delicate bones.
Saddles Sores are skin disorders that manifest themselves as a rash, irritation, or open sore.
Tip: Saddle sores are often a result of a seat that is too high. Adjust your seat and see if that solves your issue!
