March in Chicago is a cruel mistress. One day she’s sunny and almost spring-like warm. Today, flurries and wind chills in the single digits. I spy a fellow randonneur out and about. A hoodie and pink skin. I pedal and think back to my early commuting days – X-mas sweaters and the plastic bags on my feet. WHO WAS I before GORE bike wear? A determined but not a very happy camper if I remember right. Enter the award winning GORE Tool Jacket! This is a WINDSTOPPER Soft Shell garment and it earns the whole name. Its warm enough for a shell or a mid layer. If I’ve forgotten to pack my ALP-X GORE TEX jacket, a heavy rain will bead off the breathable WINDSTOPPER fabric for a few good miles. The features of the Tool are too numerous to list here, but some of the more useful doodads include: a Napoleon pocket with zip (perfect for keys, cash moneys), Reflective piping on front, back of the sleeves (safety gooood), and zipped underarm vents (these vents are huge and work great). This piece has become my companion for many months out of the year. I ride safer and more comfortably in tough conditions. Bring it on March! I’ve grown to love your moody self, and I’m dressed for the occasion. The TOOL jacket is a Village Cycle Center standard. $199.99
